The petition in support of Belgrade students started at Rutgers University

The members of the Center for Russian, Central and WEast European Studies at Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey support your efforts to restore the rule of law in your country and abhor the violence that has been inflicted on your fellow students and demonstrators. We have circulated your plea for support as best we can on our listservers.

Gerald Pirog
Associate Director

Dear colleagues,
We send you a message of support signed by postgraduate students and professors from several Universities. We shall continue collecting signatures.

In view of the recent events in Serbia, and in compliance with the autonomy of the university and academic freedom, We fully support the Student Protest of 1996 of the Belgrade University. We are aware that these protests have been taking place daily, since November 20th, immediately after the results of the local elections have been annulled. We will continue to follow closely the events in Belgrade, as well as in other cities of Serbia. We demand that, in future, what is remaining of independent media in Serbia not be in any way obstructed in informing the public of the events; moreover, that all the media in Serbia be encouraged to do their work within their professional duty. We strongly urge that no force, police or other, be used against the demonstrators, who proclaim and only exercise their right to non-violent protesting.
