Student Protest '96

December 7th, 1996

(11:00 GMT)
The rally started with national anthem sung by one of the famous opera singers of the Serbian National Theater in Belgrade, which was greeted with a loud applause.

Letters of support from the students of the political sciences from Ljubljana, the Ministry of Education of Montenegro were read, and the Serbo-American Society in New York added the notice that they have called upon the Serbs in diaspora to gather on 1st avenue in New York on Sunday December 8th and show support to the protests in Yugoslavia.

Our famous actress Neda Arneric spoke to the gathered students and their teachers today. The students were informed that 1220 professors and teaching assistants of the University of Belgrade have signed the petition up to now. 200 balloons were supplied to the students.

Today's route went along: Vasina, Kolarceva and Srpskih Vladara street, down Prizrenska and Brankova street across the bridge over the River Sava to Novi Beograd.

The students planted a spruce tree in the Park of Friendship, even though a plumb tree was announced. The idea was that the Serbian plumb will bare fruit when democracy rules in Serbia (Sljivovica brandy is made from plumbs) The students threw balloons from the bridge on their way back to the Plato. While passing by the Tanjug Press Agency, old newspapers were thrown at the building, signifying the bad news the Agency forwards. Tanjug gives almost no information of the student protest, and the news it does give are twisted and distorted. The students have again shown their peacefulness and persistence.

The Students Protest continues.
