Student demonstrators, who have been holding rallies parallel to those organized by the political opposition, suffered a new setback. Belgrade University's board of governors refused to fire Dragutin Velickovic, the institution's pro-Milosevic dean.

State TV claimed Education Minister Dragoslav Mladenovic, who was at a board's meeting, was attacked afterward by irate students.

In a symbolic protest Thursday, a crowd of students washed down the outside walls of the building where the board had met.

"Nothing can wash the shame from this building, but we have to try," student Pedja Jovanovic told Belgrade's independent Index radio.
