BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) -- Thousands of students marched through Belgrade Monday, defying the government a day after riot police used tear gas, water cannons and clubs to crush pro-democracy protests.

The protesters demand that the government honor opposition victories in Nov. 17 municipal elections. Milosevic's government has refused to acknowledge opposition victories in Belgrade and other major cities, even though they were confirmed by international observers.

Thousands March in Belgrade

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia (AP) -- Police chased student demonstrators down streets, through stores and into university buildings Monday, beating them and dragging some away in a second violent day of anti-government protests.

Less than a day after the midnight police charge on a bridge over the Sava River, a crowd of 60,000 people jammed a central square and then tried to move through central Belgrade. Hundreds of riot police blocked their path.

Earlier, up to 30,000 students marched through the city without incident.

About 15 injured people sought refuge in the nearby Philosophy building at Belgrade University, where they were treated by medical students. Independent Radio Index said some had broken bones.

Two hours earlier police had allowed more than 20,000 student protestors o march over a Belgrade river bridge after having halted and then attacked opposition activists in the same spot Sunday night.

More than 100 people were hurt in Sunday night's street battles in the city's old quarter with police repeatedly charging and clubbing demonstrators, some of whom fought back by hurling bottles, bricks and stones.

Protests continue in Belgrade

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia - Thousands of students marched through Belgrade Monday, defying the government a day after riot police used tear gas, water cannons and clubs to crush pro-democracy protests.

Students rallied at different colleges and then marched through the city. They were joined by striking cab drivers, who snarled traffic.

Police allowed more than 10,000 students to march peacefully Monday from the city center to New Belgrade over the Brankov Bridge, scene of a showdown that ended in violence Sunday night.

More than 50 others sought help from the private Anlave clinic, said Dr. Slobodan Ivanovic. He said several people suffered serious injuries, including a student who had his front teeth broken.
