BELGRADERS READY TO CONTINUE PROTESTMore
than one half of Belgraders who for the past three months
protested almost every day against the election fraud,
expressed their readiness to take to the streets once
again in order to "achieve new goals," showed
an opinion poll taken by the Argument agency among the
participants of the opposition victory celebration in
Belgrade on Feb. 21. Almost 22 percent of the polled were
against the continuation of protests, while the same
number of people was for its continuation until all the
demands were met, that is, without the setting of new
goals. Almost 65 percent of the polled who were at the
Republic Square on Feb. 21, had been protesting since the
beginning of the protest in November 1996. One quarter of
them joined the protest in December, while the rest
joined in January. When asked whether they had ever felt
like giving up the protest, 90.9 percent of the polled
said no. Only 7.9 percent confirmed of having second
thoughts about continuing to demonstrate.
