COUNCIL TO MEET ON FEBRUARY 12Deans
of the Belgrade University colleges scheduled a session
of the Council of Deans to be held on Feb. 12. The
Council of Deans was established on Dec. 30, 1996, after
the Belgrade University Council had refused to fulfill
students' demands. The University Council is a
government-controlled body, and its members, mainly
appointed by the government, refused to oust Belgrade
University President Dragutin Velickovic, which was one
of the major student demands. The Belgrade University has
30 deans, while the newly-formed Council of Deans
includes 20 deans. Secretary of Belgrade University,
Silvija Zdravkovic, representatives of the student
protest and members of the professors' committee to
protect democracy, are invited to attend the session. A
majority of the deans, and all institute heads at the
university decided on the Jan. 30, to end all cooperation
with Dragutin Velickovic, who they found to be the most
responsible for the crisis at the university.
