Dear conspiracy theorists, this one is for you.
The most hawkish member of the foreign policy team of the United States,
Secretary of State, Madeleine
"why-have-military-if-we-are-not-going-to-use-it" Albright, is at the
moment nowhere to be seen. But, than, this great woman is so full of
surprises. And secrets. Here are a few quotes from the recent article in
the New Yorker about her with the title DOUBLE IDENTITY and the subtitle
that raises the question: Why Madeleine Albright can't escape her past.
"While she had picked up rumors about her Jewish ancestry, particularly
during the years 'since my name began appearing in the press,' she had
been too busy to check up on them."
"The controversy over whether she had been aware of her Jewish origins
upset Albright considerably. In addition to coping with the pressure of
her job Albright had to struggle with complex questions about her own
identity. She had to explain herself to her children, while dealing with
suspicions, particularly strong among the Jews, that she had been less
than truthful about her past."
"Four days after her graduation from Wellesley, she married Joseph Medill
Patterson Albright. Her husband's great-great-grand-father Joseph Medill
had been the owner of the Chicago Tribune and mayor of Chicago; his
grandfather Joseph Medill Patterson started the New York Daily News. His
aunt Alicia Patterson was the founder and publisher of Newsday and her
husband was Harry Gugenheim, a friend of Charles Lindberg."
"In addition to bringing up tree daughters, working as a political
volunteer, and serving on innumerable boards, she spent eight years
studying for a Ph.D., which she got in 1976."
"At eight o'clock in the morning on January 13, 1982, her husband of
twenty-three years announced that he was in love with another woman.
Madeleine went from shock to wanting 'to show that S.O.B.' in the phrase
of a Washington friend of hers."
"Working for Dukakis put Albright in the inner circle of influential
Democrats. It also provided her with a valuable introduction to the
governor of Arkansas, Bill Clinton. A year later Clinton asked her for a
letter of recommendation to the Council on Foreign Relations. She was
happy to oblige. In 1992, President-elect-Clinton returned the favor.
Clinton named Albright as the United States Ambassador to the United
Nations. Beginning in August of 1993, Albright badgered the White House
with memos on Bosnia. She argued at every opportunity that Bosnia was
destroying American credibility both at home and abroad. Her influence
though was peripheral."
Also in 1993, she had her famous run-in with Colin Powell, when she asked
him "What's the point of having this superb military you're always talking
about, if we can't use it." (I thought I would have an aneurysm, Powell
later wrote in his memoirs.)
"Albright does not yet have a diplomacy triumph to call her own, and the
Kosovo crisis is her first really personal test on the international
stage."
Well, I don't know about you, but I think she's passing this test with
flying colors. How many Secretaries of state do you know that ignited a
World crisis and, a little later, mark my words, World War III?
But where's the conspiracy, you ask. Well, according to the article,
Madeleine recommended Bill for the admission into the Council of Foreign
Relations. If you want to find out more about that noble institution, go
